Rust Coloured Silence

behind the frame

One vehicle, one road, and a mountain that refuses to be measured.

the story

I had been watching the slope for a while before the car arrived. The sand ran down from the ridge in long sweeping lines, and the whole scene sat in a single rust-brown register, as if the light itself had been filtered through dust. The road curved out of frame to the right, and the fence on the left gave me the only straight line to work with. When the SUV came to a stop in the middle of the tarmac, the composition simply closed itself. I did not want to move closer; the distance was the point. I kept the vehicle small against the slope, because that is how it felt standing there. Everything human in the picture — the fence, the leaning pole, the painted marker stones — looked temporary next to the mountain behind it.

the encounter

There was no dramatic moment to wait for. The light was flat, the colour was uniform, and the only variable was where the car would stop. When it settled on the empty road, headlights toward me, I framed wide enough to include the full sweep of sand and the ridge above, then made a small number of frames before the quiet was broken. The result is close to what my eye saw: a single vehicle, a long grey road, and a landscape that swallows both.
