Craig, Out of the Dark

behind the frame

The last light on the greatest ivory in Africa.

the story

I photographed Craig in Amboseli in 2023. He was one of the biggest elephants in Africa, and standing this close to him was not something I took lightly. I worked the frame so that only his face and tusks held light. Everything else — the ears, the shoulders, the ground he stood on — fell away into black. The wrinkled skin across his trunk and the scarred, weathered ivory were all I needed. Craig died in 2025. This is probably the closest photograph of him I ever made, and it is the one I keep coming back to.

the encounter

He came head-on, close enough that his tusks filled the lower half of the frame. I stayed low and let the darkness do the editing, exposing for the ivory rather than the animal. The result is a portrait stripped back to essentials: two immense curved tusks, a heavily lined trunk, and two eyes just visible in the shadow. Nothing added, nothing to distract.
