Blue Beard, Bare Branch

the story

The sky had gone flat and white, the kind of light that flattens everything except colour. Against it, the bare branch stood out like a pencil line, and the bird sitting near its fork was the only thing with any saturation left in the frame. I worked with what the light gave me. No detail in the background, no horizon, nothing to place the moment except the lichen on the wood and the green and blue of the bird itself. The long tail streamers hung below the branch, moving slightly. It stayed long enough for a handful of frames, head turned away, bill lifted. Then the branch was empty again. The sky looked exactly the same as before.

the encounter

Shooting upward into a bright overcast sky meant the bird was almost a silhouette until I opened up the exposure and let the background blow out completely. That trade felt worth it: the plumage held its green, and the blue throat patch stayed vivid. The composition came from the branch rather than from me. Its diagonal rise and the small side twig framed the bird naturally, so I kept the wood in shot and let the emptiness around it do the rest of the work.
