Crest Against Green

the story

I found the branch first. It arced out of the undergrowth, pale and blotched with lichen, the only hard line in a scene otherwise made entirely of blurred green. Then the kingfisher was on it. Crest up, barred plumage crisp against the softness behind, that heavy dark bill angled slightly away from me. It sat without fuss and let me watch. I kept the frame wide on purpose. The bird is small in it, and I wanted that — the sense of one precise, patterned thing set inside an ocean of leaves.

the encounter

The light was flat and even, the background far enough behind the perch to fall away into a single wash of green. I worked from a low, steady position and let the branch run across the lower third of the frame. The kingfisher held its position long enough for me to breathe and settle. I made a handful of exposures, keeping composition simple: the bird slightly left of centre, the crest reading clearly against open space, the branch carrying the eye out to the right.
