behind the frame
She chose the middle of the road, and the forest went quiet.
the story
I had been watching the track for a while, the way it curved out of sight between the trees. The light was flat and low, the kind that softens everything and takes the edge off the dust. Then she was simply there, coming down the centre of the trail. This is Pedwali. She held a straight line, head level, and the lens flattened the distance between us until the whole frame was just her and the pale, sandy track I kept the focus on her eyes and let the rest fall away: dark trunks standing to the right, the ground scattered with fallen leaves. One frame, and then she carried on with her evening.
the encounter
Photographed from a low, distant position on the track, which turned the receding trail into soft layers of dust, grass and leaf litter. Pedwali is centred in the frame, walking directly toward the camera with her forelegs mid-stride. The shallow depth of field holds her face sharp while the undergrowth and tree trunks on either side dissolve into shadowed green. No baiting, no calling, no approach — the distance was kept and the moment was left as it happened.
