the story
This frame is my daughter Riddhi's, made on her first trip to Dudhwa Tiger Reserve. She was the one watching the grass when it moved. Dudhwa is unusual. Inside the reserve there is a conservatory set aside for rhinos, making this one of the only places outside Assam where the greater one-horned Indian rhino still lives. Seeing that animal emerge from the grass, folded plates of hide catching the light, is not something a first trip usually offers. Riddhi got it on her first.
the encounter
The rhino came forward out of the tall grass and held its line towards the camera, ears turned up, head low. In the flat light the grassland went dark at the edges and the animal read almost sculptural against it. Riddhi made the frame from the vehicle. The grass closed again behind it soon after.
