behind the frame
Two shapes moving through a field of light.
the story
The grass at Dhikala was taller than I expected, and for a while all I could see were the tips of it moving. Then the light came low across the slope and the whole field turned copper, and two grey shapes rose out of it. The adult walked first, her back and head still streaked with dried mud. The calf stayed just ahead and below her, small enough that the grass reached its shoulder. Her trunk came forward and hung loosely toward the calf, the gesture that made the frame. I kept the pair low and left, letting the empty grass and the hazy ridge carry the rest. Nothing about the moment was dramatic. It was simply two animals travelling together in good light, which is often the picture worth waiting for.
the encounter
I found them on the grassland at Dhikala in the first strong light of the morning, walking left to right across open ground. The haze on the ridge behind them was still thick enough to flatten it into a soft wash, so the elephants read almost as silhouettes with texture. I stayed with a long lens and shot into the light, exposing for the animals and letting the foreground grass blur into warm colour. The adult's trunk extended toward the calf as they moved, and that was the frame I kept.
