behind the frame
One bird, one branch
the story
I found the branch before I found the bird. A pale, forked limb crossing an otherwise unbroken field of green, with two tired leaves still holding on. Then the kingfisher was there, back turned, head angled just enough for the long coral bill to catch the light. The blue of the wing and the chestnut of the crown sat against the background like two notes in an empty room. I kept the frame wide on purpose. The space around the bird was doing as much work as the bird itself.
the encounter
The light was soft, letting the background wash into a smooth green with no distracting detail. I worked long and stayed still, framing the bird small against the diagonal of the branch rather than filling the frame with it. The kingfisher held its position on the fork for long enough to get the perfect picture, head turned in profile with the bill fully separated from the twigs behind. I made a small set of frames and left the perch as I found it.
